The short answer: private radiology clinics generally offer much shorter waits — often same-week or same-day for X-ray and ultrasound — while public hospital imaging is free for public patients but prioritised by clinical urgency, so non-urgent scans can wait weeks to months. If your scan is urgent, your referring doctor can mark it urgent and clinics will triage accordingly.
Why the difference exists
Public hospital radiology departments serve emergency departments, inpatients, and outpatient clinics from the same machines, so routine outpatient requests sit behind clinically urgent work. Private clinics schedule appointment-based work and compete on availability, which keeps routine waits short.
Typical patterns by modality
- X-ray: most private clinics accept walk-ins — often no booking needed.
- Ultrasound: usually bookable within days; sonographer availability is the main constraint, especially in regional areas.
- CT: commonly available within days privately.

Six ways to be seen sooner
- Ask your GP to mark the referral urgent if it is — triage teams act on it.
- Ring several clinics. Availability varies significantly between practices in the same city.
- Ask about cancellation lists — same-week slots open up daily.
- Be flexible on location. A clinic 20 minutes further away may scan you a week earlier — compare options on Imaging Finder.
- Consider early-morning or evening slots, which many larger clinics run and patients book last.

Regional and rural patients
Waits are typically longer outside capital cities, particularly for MRI and specialised ultrasound. If you are travelling to a major centre anyway, it can be worth booking imaging there — browse clinics in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.
