MRI vs CT Scan: Which One Do You Need?

The short answer: CT scans use X-rays and excel at imaging bone, the chest, and acute injuries quickly. MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves — no ionising radiation — and gives superior detail of soft tissue such as the brain, spinal cord, joints, and ligaments. Your referring doctor chooses based on the clinical question, not personal preference.

How a CT scan works

A CT (computed tomography) scanner rotates an X-ray beam around your body to build cross-sectional images. Scans are fast — often under a minute of actual scanning — which makes CT the workhorse for emergency imaging, chest and abdominal assessment, kidney stones, and complex fractures.

How an MRI works

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses a strong magnet and radio waves to map water molecules in tissue. It takes longer — typically 20 to 45 minutes — and is louder, but it produces exceptional soft-tissue contrast. MRI is preferred for brain and spinal imaging, sports injuries involving ligaments and cartilage, and many cancer investigations.

  • Implants: Some pacemakers and metal implants restrict MRI — always declare them.

Do I need a referral?

Which costs more?
